Response sheet 14, for class, Thursday

1.  What kinds of people were excluded from American citizenship in 1790?  Where did these assumptions come from?

2.  What additional kinds of people were excluded in 1795?  Where did these sudden new concerns come from?  Did the new law explain itself?

3.  What happened to John Adams’s attitude toward “the people” over the years between 1765 and 1775 and 1790?  How did equality and democracy fit into his vision of the “nation” in each period?

4.  Whom did William Manning blame for the many problems that were jeopardizing the fragile young nation in the 1790s?  Whom did he believe could fix those problems?  Compared to John Adams, how did equality and democracy fit into Manning’s vision?
