History of American Capitalisms

Response sheet 3, for class, Tuesday

For today we shall examine two short pieces that seek to convey a strong sense of importance about both their historical research as well as their contemporary resonance.  In what ways do they hope that their research and writing really matters — for our understanding of the historical past, and for our grappling with our own contemporary moment?  How are they each addressing something that is missing?  What are they each questioning?  Please keep in mind these questions as you respond to the questions below.

1.  In the reading by Postel, what techniques does Postel use to generate importance with respect to the history of the 19th century?

2.  And how does Postel try to create importance for his book’s contemporary resonance?

3.  The same questions for Redman.  What techniques does Redman use to generate importance with respect to the history of the 19th century?

4.  And how does Redman try to create importance for her essay’s contemporary resonance?
