Today we will be considering one of the governing questions of this class, which relates directly to some of your paper topics (and indirectly to all): What is the relationship between “the government” and “the economy”? At the same time, we will be testing out how to read primary sources closely and carefully, so please spotlight some specific key passages in the texts, and interpret them. 1. What kind of relationship between “the government” and “the economy” was created by this 1784 land ordinance, which set policies for the absorption of western lands ceded by the British empire to the United States in the peace treaty at the end of the War of American Independence? 2. What kind of relationship between “the government” and “the economy” was created by the initial Constitution of the United States (1787-1789)? |
