History Capstone Seminar

Progress report for week 7

BEFORE CLASS

1.  For class this week, please read the introductory section (pp. 1376-1383) of Vanessa Ogle’s article.  What were some of the different ways that Ogle used secondary sources #151; to accomplish what?

IN-CLASS WRITING

2.  Please bring your favorite (so far in your research) primary-source nugget with you to class — a particularly fabulous short excerpt of a primary source, which you already plan to feature in some way somewhere in your research paper.

3.  How does Ogle’s article help you rethink your own use of secondary sources, whether for background, context, conceptualization, historical moment, historiographical contribution, parallel case studies, et cetera?

4.  We also talked about broadening the ambition of your research projects, so that you might confront bigger historical themes, engage with more compelling secondary sources beyond your specific topic, and define your contribution with more significance.  So, five key elements of your research project:

a.  Place(s)

b.  Time frame

c.  Specific topic

d.  Bigger theme #1

e.  Bigger theme #2

5.  Compared to the beginning of the semester, how has your reearch project sharpened over the last six weeks, so far?
